Training Room members at the MWA 1st Weightlifting Ranking Competition
The first weightlifting competition for 2024 was held on the 24th of February at the Cottonera Sports Complex. The competition organised by MWA saw 7 of our Training Room members registering, with one athlete unfortutnely having to withdraw last minute due to injury.
In the women's category, we had Alana Muscat and Svetlana Falzon who are both no stranger to weightlifting competitions. Alana started off strong, managing all her snatches at 56kg, 59kg and 62kg. All these attempts were an improvement on her previous best in competition from last December where she has managed 55kg. However, unfortunately, she was unsuccessful on her clean and jerk attempts. Svetlana managed a PR snatch of 53kg and ended with another PR in the clean and jerk portion with 63kg.

In the Men's category, Training Room had 2 participants compete for the first time in an official weightlifting competition, Stephen Garcia and Manuel Manolo. Both ended with successful results, with Stevo managing a PR snatch at 78kg and also a 95kg clean and jerk. While Manuel went 85kg in the snatch and 100kg in the clean and jerk.
The top 2 men's results overall on the day went to 2 TR members. Weightlifting Coach Dimitrije Avramovic ended the competition with 116kg Snatch, which is just 5 kg shy of his competition best, then went on to match his competition best in the clean and jerk at 150kg. Anton Micallef, who is currently preparing for an upcoming international championship, managed 112kg on his second snatch attempt and 138kg on his first clean and jerk. Anton is no stranger to the international platform, and will be once again representing Malta in an international competition this March.
Coach William Grima, who has just competed at the Turf Games last weekend, had to withdraw from this competition due to a minor injury.
Congratulations to all our dedicated members!
